The Gilder Lehrman Institute Announces BHSEC Professor Jazmin Puicon as a 2024 History Teacher of the Year
Jazmin Puicon, a professor at Bard High School Early College Newark, has been announced as a 2024 History Teacher of the Year for New Jersey by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Puicon, a historian of modern Latin America, focuses her research on popular democracy, Afro-Colombian women, and working-class culture in urban Colombia, and her writing examines how the working class in Cali, Colombia, sustained families and communities by embracing popular democracy despite increased local and national political violence. The Gilder Lehrman Institute is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to K–12 history education in the US, and its mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding of American history through educational programs and resources. For over 20 years, the institute has celebrated more than 1,000 exemplary American history teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools in all 50 states.
