Leon Botstein Discusses the Challenges of Learning During a Pandemic, the Value of Higher Education in Prisons, and the Obligation of Educators to Emphasize the Link between Learning and Democracy

“Before the pandemic there was a lot of utopian talk that online education would replace classrooms. It was kind of an easy fix for the failures of education thinking that technology would come to the rescue as kind of a white knight,” Botstein tells CNN International Host Christiane Amanpour. “We’ve never believed this and the one lesson from the pandemic is that there’s no replacement for teaching and learning in real time and a real place with fellow students and with faculty.”
