Rebeca Huntt ’12 Interviewed by TIME for Her New Autobiographical Documentary Beba
For Rebeca Huntt ’12, the release of Beba, her debut, autobiographical documentary, came with some worry about how the film would be received. Members of her family are interviewed extensively throughout, with her own life serving as the subject of the film. After seeing audiences respond to the work, however, these fears have receded. “This film is bigger than my fear and what I think people are gonna think of me,” Huntt said in an interview with TIME. At the festival circuit, viewers would approach her after screenings to share their own familial histories, which were often “intense and intimate.” “Having people come and talk to me about these things that otherwise would be shameful is like, that’s why I did this,” Huntt said. “What is my fear in the face of that?” The film, which was released on June 24, 2022, has received widespread critical acclaim, with Huntt being named one of 10 rising Black women film directors by Indiewire. At the close of the interview, Huntt was asked what she hoped people would take away from Beba. “That it’s okay to be authentic,” she answered.
