Bard Receives Grant for Arboretum and Horticulture Education
BARD COLLEGE RECEIVES GRANT FOR ARBORETUM AND HORTICULTURE EDUCATION FROM THE STANLEY SMITH HORTICULTURAL TRUST
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College has received a $20,000 grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust in San Francisco. The education-based award will be used to help purchase a professional software program for managing botanical gardens and arboreta collections; a resistograph (graphing drill that measures tree decay); educational plant labels, signage, and printed educational materials; and support staff time.
“The grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust will aid us in cataloguing the horticultural resources within our arboretum and educating the public about our collection,” explains Amy Foster ’99, horticulture supervisor.
Situated on 550 acres, with views of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River, Bard College is noted for its natural beauty, with meadows, dense forests, wetlands, and a Hudson River tributary. The architectural legacy of the campus can be seen in 19th-century stone houses and riverfront mansions, as well as in contemporary buildings designed by renowned modern-day architects, such as the Frank Gehry–designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts; the Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Center for Science and Computation, designed by Rafael Viñoly; and Stevenson Library, designed by Robert Venturi.
This is the second major award this year in support of the Bard arboretum and landscape education. In May 2007, the Getty Foundation awarded Bard a prestigious Campus Heritage Grant of $160,000 for a master plan to increase the level of preservation of Bard’s historic buildings and landscapes.
The Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust was created in 1970 by May Smith in honor of her late husband. The trust supports education and research in ornamental horticulture, primarily in North and South America.
