Bard College to Host Lecture on Gender Equality in Islam, April 23
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY — On Thursday, April 23, Nina Nurmila, a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Redlands in California, will speak at Bard College. Her talk, “Gender Equality in Islam,” is being by arranged by the South East Asian Studies Consortium of the Hudson Valley (SEASCOHV) and is supported by the Fulbright Foundation. The event is free and open to the public and takes place at 4:30 p.m. in room 205 of the Olin Humanities Building.
Nurmila holds a Ph.D. in Gender and Islamic studies from the University of Melbourne, where her thesis was “Negotiating Polygamy in Indonesia: Between Muslim Discourse and Women’s Lived Experiences.” She earned an M.A. degree in Development Studies from Murdoch University in Western Australia. Since 1994, she has held various positions, including head of the English Department in the Islamic Education Faculty and head of the Gender Division at the Center for Studies of Religion and Society at the State Islamic University in Bandung, Indonesia, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. In addition, she holds a diploma in conflict resolution from Uppsala University. She has done postdoctoral research at the University of Technology of Sydney, Australia, where she worked on her upcoming book for Routledge, London: Women, Islam and Everyday Life: Renegotiating Polygamy in Indonesia. Her research interests are in gender, Islam and Muslim societies, especially Indonesia.
South East Asian Studies Consortium of the Hudson Valley (SEASCOHV) is a collaborative effort by Bard College, Bard College at Simon's Rock: the Early College, Vassar College, and the SUNY New Paltz to further develop and strengthen the study of Southeast Asia in our region.
