The Bard College Institute for Liberal Education Presents Debate and Discussion "Literature in a Closed and Open Society—The Romanian Case"
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College’s Institute for Liberal Education and the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York present a debate titled “Literature in a Closed and Open Society— The Romanian Case,” on Wednesday, September 1 at 6 p.m. at Weiss Cinema, on the Bard College campus. For more information visit www.bard.edu or call 845-758-0074.
The two interlocutors—Norman Manea, Francis Flournoy Professor of European Culture and writer in residence and Claudiu Turcus, graduate of Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Ph.D. candidate, Fellow at Bard—are of different ages and experience. They will debate the daily life in a totalitarian state and the censured, coded culture it produced, compared to the changes democracy brought to Eastern Europe in the difficult period of transition from communism to capitalism. The discussion will include the current economic and political crises in our globalized world. Cultural issues will be put in their contextual social premise and explored in the perspective of the drastic changes the electronic age has brought and is continuing to bring creativity.
The Institute for International Liberal Education (IILE) was formed at Bard in 1998. Its mission is to advance the theory and practice of international liberal arts education. The Institute has interests in human rights theory and practice, and in translation. In all of its activities, IILE seeks to realize a humane and forward-looking educational politics; and in this way contribute to the just and realistic solution of global problems.
