Bard College’s Renowned Literary Magazine, Conjunctions, Wins $75,000 in Grants from National Endowment for the Arts and New York State Council on the Arts
Conjunctions publishes innovative fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction by emerging voices and contemporary masters in a biannual anthology of new writing that appears every May and November. For over three decades, Conjunctions has challenged accepted forms and styles, with equal emphasis on groundbreaking experimentation and rigorous quality. The journal is committed to launching and supporting the careers of unknown authors—William T. Vollmann, David Foster Wallace, and Karen Russell all had some of their very first publications in Conjunctions—while providing a space for better-known voices like Joyce Carol Oates or William H. Gass to work outside audience expectations. Conjunctions’ free weekly online magazine showcases the work of one writer each week, giving the journal a place to publish the exceptional work that doesn’t fit into the theme of a given anthology, to feature high-quality visual work, and to delve into the exciting new field of e-writing. Conjunctions’ website also features a multimedia vault of recorded readings, unavailable elsewhere; as well as full-text selections from the anthologies and a constantly updated table of contents for its upcoming issue.
Published by Bard College, with editorial offices in New York City and Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, Conjunctions this year took the top spot for the number of Pushcart Prizes in fiction received by its contributors over the past decade. Since 1981, this cornerstone of contemporary literary publishing has been a living notebook in which authors can write freely and audiences read dangerously.
