Bard College Awarded $896,000 by the New York State Education Department to Support the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College has been awarded an $896,000 five-year grant from the New York State Education Department to support its Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). This funding supports Bard’s 32 HEOP scholars with tuition assistance, a prematriculation summer program, and tutorial and counseling services. During the current grant cycle, Bard HEOP will focus on increasing the retention and graduation rates of its scholars, supporting those scholars in the pursuit of competitive postgraduate opportunities, and increasing the recruiting radius to ensure that students from regions of New York previously underserved by Bard have the opportunity to attend.“This funding will allow the College to continue its long tradition of supporting high-achieving and ambitious students who might otherwise not have access to a residential liberal arts and sciences education,” said David Shein, associate vice president and dean of studies. “The Higher Education Opportunity Program enriches the student body and the campus community and we are delighted to continue our collaboration with the New York State Education Department.”
HEOP is a partnership between the State of New York and its independent colleges, which provides economically and educationally disadvantaged residents with the possibility of a college education. The primary objective of HEOP is to help offer a broad range of services to students who, due to academic and economic circumstances, would otherwise be unable to attend college, yet have the potential and desire to obtain a college degree.
Sponsored jointly through a grant from the New York State Education Department and Bard College since 1969, Bard’s Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program has been a centerpiece of the College’s efforts to expand the reach of the liberal arts and change the complexion of the American liberal arts college campus. The program helps confront the reality faced by many students aspiring to attend college—that of having of few options and fewer opportunities due to a lack of economic and educational resources—by making a substantial financial commitment to HEOP scholars and providing them with the academic and personal support services necessary to thrive in Bard’s academically challenging liberal arts environment.

Internationally, Bard confers dual B.A. degrees at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. Petersburg State University, Russia (Smolny College); American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan; and Bard College Berlin: A Liberal Arts University; as well as dual B.A. and M.A.T. degrees at Al-Quds University in the West Bank.
Bard offers nearly 50 academic programs in four divisions. Total enrollment for Bard College and its affiliates is approximately 5,000 students.
