The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) Announces Footnotes
On view April 13– May 25, 2014
Opening reception on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY, March 2014 - The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) presents the exhibition Footnotes opening on April 13, 2014. The artworks selected for Footnotes are housed in the CCS Bard Hessel Museum, but their representations, meanings, and contexts exceed their physical locality. This exhibition spatially contextualizes artworks by rethinking the relationship between title, text, and footnote.
Footnotes includes works byJanine Antoni, David Altmejd, Barbara Bloom, Moyra Davey, Keith Edmier, Olafur Eliasson, VALIE EXPORT, Saul Fletcher, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Mona Hatoum, Alfredo Jaar, An-My Lê, Paulo Nazareth, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotti Rist, Martha Rosler, Daniela Rossell, Mika Rottenberg, Frances Stark, and Thomas Struth.
Often considered to be ancillary information to a main text, here the “footnote” serves as portal, escape hatch, link, or dead end. References to escape, fantasy, travel, and their residues explore themes of mobility and transposition.
While this exhibition presents the gallery wall as a facsimile of the written page, the footnoted information is not subsidiary to the primary text. In this model, the footnote transcends the boundaries below the text to reveal interwoven connections that at times allow the viewer to delve further into contexts of the work, or escape it altogether.
Co-curated by the class of 2015 M.A. candidates at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College: Xavier Acarin, Kathleen Ditzig, Amber Esseiva, Roxana Fabius, Lee Foley, Wang Jing, Elizabeth Larison, Robin Lynch, Park Myers, and Natalia Zuluaga.
Footnotes will be on view from April 13 - May 25, 2014, with the opening reception taking place on Sunday, April 13th from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

About the Center for Curatorial Studies
The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) was founded in 1990 as an exhibition and research center for the study of late twentieth-century and contemporary art and culture and to explore experimental approaches to the presentation of these topics and their impact on our world. Since 1994, the Center for Curatorial Studies and its graduate program have provided one of the world’s most forward thinking teaching and learning environments for the research and practice of contemporary art and curatorship. Broadly interdisciplinary, CCS Bard encourages students, faculty and researchers to question the critical and political dimension of art, its mediation and its social significance. CCS Bard cultivates innovative thinking, radical research and new ways to challenge our understanding of the social and civic values of the visual arts. CCS Bard provides an intensive educational program alongside its public events, exhibitions, and publications, which collectively explore the critical potential of the institutions and practices of exhibition-making. It is uniquely positioned within the larger Center’s tripartite resources, which include the internationally renowned CCS Bard Library and Archives and the Hessel Museum of Art, with its rich permanent collection.
