ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.– Whether trained specialists or lay people who care about something, preservationists come from every stratum of life. The archivist, the linguist, the local town historian. The paleontologist, the heirloom seed-saver, the family photographer. Conjunctions:70, Sanctuary: The Preservation Issue —the latest issue of the innovative literary magazine published by Bard College—explores the myriad ways in which we go about preserving what might otherwise be forfeited. Edited by Conjunctions editor, novelist, and Bard literature professor Bradford Morrow, Sanctuary features an exclusive interview between Morrow and National Book Award-winning author Richard Powers, the first excerpt from Pulitzer Prize finalist Diane Ackerman’s forthcoming debut novel, as well as new work from Rae Armantrout, Mary Jo Bang, Julia Elliott, Andrew Ervin, Peter Gizzi, Robin Hemley, Nam Le, Toby Olson, Peter Orner, Donald Revell, Elizabeth Robinson, Joanna Ruocco, Arthur Sze, and Frederic Tuten.
“All things are inherently fragile, no matter how permanent and indestructible they may seem,” writes Morrow. “Being mortal, we can only preserve our health, our very lives, for a circumscribed span of time. But what of our works—our languages, our communities, our arts and sciences, our institutions, our families? And what of our earth, its forests, rivers, mountains, skies, and oceans? The writers in Sanctuary: The Preservation Issue come at these and similar questions from a host of perspectives. Here are meditations on the preservation of friendship and family, of memory and bodies, of literature kept alive through the gift of translation.”
Additional contributors to Being Bodies include Heather Altfeld, Mauro Javier Cardenas, J’Lyn Chapman, Rae Gouirand, Troy Jollimore, Robert Karron, Madeline Kearin, Marshall Klimasewiski, Byron Landry, Maria Lioutaia, Andrew Mossin, Debra Nystrom, Jessica Reed, Kyra Simone, Erin Singer, Maya Sonenberg, Donna Stonecipher, S. P. Tenhoff, and Daniel Torday.
