PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING NOVELIST ROBERT OLEN BUTLER WILL READ FROM RECENT WORKS AT BARD COLLEGE ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist, Robert Olen Butler reads from his recent fiction at Bard College on Monday, February 21. The reading, which begins at 2:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the F.W. Olin Humanities Building, is part of a series of appearances by leading contemporary authors presented by Bard professor Bradford Morrow. The reading is free and open to the public.

"The triumph is that Butler has brought his own lyric prose and quirky vision . . . and created a lovely and thoughtful tribute to the nature and power of the word," writes Kit Reed in the Washington Post about Butler's recent novel Mr. Spaceman, which tells the story of an alien who has studied American people for the last century.

Butler is also the author of two collections of short fiction, Tabloid Dreams and A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain (for which he won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for fiction), and the novels The Alleys of Eden, Sun Dogs, Countryman of Bones, On Distant Ground, Wabash, The Deuce, They Whisper, and The Deep Green Sea. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts and the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Butler has written screenplays for Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Disney, and Universal Pictures. He teaches creative writing at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he lives with his wife, the novelist and playwright Elizabeth Dewberry.
