Spoken Words with poet and actor Saul Williams on Friday, February 18, AT 7:00pm AT BARD COLLEGE Evening features screening of the film Slam and poetry performances by Williams and Bard students
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Office of Multicultural Affairs at Bard College and the Bard Black Student Organization present poet and actor Saul Williams in the program "Spoken Words" on Friday, February 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bertelsmann Campus Center Multipurpose Room. Following the screening of Slam and a short discussion with Williams, one of the four screenwriters of the film, there will be a poetry performance featuring Saul Williams and Bard College students at 9:30 p.m. "Spoken Words" is free and open to the public.
Saul Williams is an accomplished actor and one of four screenwriters of the featured film Slam, the story of a young man who learns the power of the word in a world seemingly void of poetry. Williams is also featured in the documentaries Underground Voices, which examines Brooklyn's underground poetry scene, and Slam Nation, which looks at the growing popularity of slam poetry through the eyes of Saul and his Nuyorican Slam teammates as they venture to the National Poetry Festival in Portland, Oregon.
Williams poetry has been featured in the New York Times, Bomb magazine, Red Clay Anthology, and African Voices. His work is also included in the anthologies In Defense of Mumia, Catch the Fire, The Seventh Octave, and She. He was the Nuyorican Poet Café's Grand Champion in 1996 and has represented them in a variety of events. Williams has shared the stage with such renowned artists as The Last Poets, Allen Ginsberg, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, The Fugees, The Jungle Brothers, The Roots, and Erkah Badu.
