"WRITING OUT ILLNESS" IS THE TOPIC OF AN ALL-DAY WRITERS' WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY, JULY 8
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Saturday, July 8, Bob Seder, associate of the Institute of Writing and Thinking at Bard College and the author of To the Marrow, will lead an all-day writers' workshop which focuses on the concept of "Writing Out Illness." Pre-registration for the workshop is recommended; call 914-758-7508.
"Bob Seder, who has been teaching basic writing at Bard for some time, had a serious illness in his life and found writing a way to deal with it," explains Stuart Levine, Dean of the College. "This workshop will appeal to a large audience of people, including either those who through their illness feel isolated from the normal world with no one to listen to them except caregivers, or those who think that they will never be well again. Having experienced a serious illness myself, the most important realization is that time and the illness do hopefully pass, and there is eventually a sense of getting better."
"At some time in our lives, we all face serious illness: in ourselves, in our families, or in our work as caregivers. The story of illness is, for many of us, one that insists on its telling," says Bob Seder, workshop leader. "To those who have wanted to write about their own or another's illness, this workshop offers practices with which to start and to sustain their writing. As we write and read together, the workshop becomes a respectful place to have our writing heard and to learn by listening to that of others." Seder concludes, "The work may not be curative, but it may go some way toward making meaning of tough times. The workshop welcomes those with writing experience, as well as people new to writing as a pursuit."
The workshop begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. in Room 201 of the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College, and includes two ninety-minute sessions before lunch. After lunch, there is one ninety-minute session and one two-hour session which is completed by 6:00 p.m. The workshop fee is $25.00.
