EXHIBITION BY BARD COLLEGE ALUMNUS JEFFREY SCHWARTZ WILL OPEN AT THE FISHER STUDIO ARTS BUILDING ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 5
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Alumni/ae Office presents the exhibition "Café Scenes and Portraits" by artist Jeffrey Schwartz, Class of '66, at the Fisher Studio Arts Building, Bard College, from Saturday, August 5, through Sunday, August 13. There are opening and closing artist's receptions on Sunday, August 5, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday, August 13, from noon to 6:00 p.m. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Both the receptions and exhibition are free and open to the public.
Jeffrey Schwartz describes the work to be exhibited as "a series of drawings which originate from an alternative coffee house across the street from my studio. They portray the regulars, the homeless, and the irregulars who make Café Quebec their second home." He continues, "my style is oddly reminiscent of Toulouse Lautrec." It has been noted that Schwartz's penetrating, offbeat spontaneity is curiously disturbing and provoking.
Jeffrey Schwartz, a philosophy major, studied art while at Bard College in the 1960s with Mathew Phillips and John CuRoi. After three years of graduate studies in philosophy, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and take up the practice of law. He obtained his JD from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1973 and went on to practice law for 20 years in Tucson, primarily representing indigent criminal defendants as a public defender. In the early 1990s he withdrew from the practice of law to resume his abiding interest in art and began studying with Andrew Rush at the Drawing Studio. He subsequently opened an art studio in the downtown arts district of Tucson.
