THE BARD COLLEGE VOCAL ENSEMBLE AND COMMUNITY CHORUS WILL PERFORM "FROM RENAISSANCE TO RED HOOK: CHORAL MUSIC FROM THE CLASSICAL TRADITION AND BEYOND" ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY—\"From Renaissance to Red Hook: Choral Music from the Classical Tradition and Beyond\" will be performed by the Bard College Vocal Ensemble and Community Chorus, conducted by James Bagwell, on Sunday, December 10. The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall on the Bard College campus.

Pianist Emily Upham will accompany the chorus which will perform Monteverdi\'s \"Lagrime d\'amante al sepolcro dell\'amata\" (Tears of a Lover at the Tomb of the Beloved), Pachelbel\'s Magnificat, Brahms\'s \"Vier Zigeunerlieder,\" Op. 112 (Four Gypsy Songs), and selections from colonial American tunebooks, including shape-note hymns, and works by William Billings.

Jay Harvey writes in the Indianapolis Star that \"Bagwell displayed a fine sense of detail and proportion. . . . His cues and encouragement to soloists, the choir, and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra had an electrifying intensity that seemed to yield a full measure of commitment to the music by all concerned.\". James Bagwell, assistant professor of music and director of choral programs at Bard College, maintains an active schedule throughout the United States as a conductor of choral, operatic, and symphonic literature. He is the principal guest conductor and artistic adviser of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, which he will conduct this season in a performance of Bach\'s B Minor Mass, along with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Singers, a professional ensemble that he founded. Bagwell is also the music director of the May Festival Youth Chorus in Cincinnati and the director of choruses for the May Festival Summer Chorus. He has also trained choruses for major American orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, and Ashville Symphony, working with such notable conductors as Raymond Leppard, James Conlon, Christof Perick, Imre Palló, Jesús López-Cobos, Erich Kunzel, Robert Porco, and Robert Shaw. He has been appointed music director of the Light Opera of Oklahoma and will conduct three productions for its 2001 summer festival.
