THE CENTER FOR CURATORIAL STUDIES AT BARD COLLEGE WILL PRESENT THREE EXHIBITIONS OF CONTEMPORARY ART ON VIEW FROM FEBRUARY 11 TO 25 First-year graduate students curate the exhibitions I Need You To Be There, Angles of Incidence, and The Volatile Real

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY—The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College will present three exhibitions curated by first-year graduate students in the Center’s master’s degree program. They will be on view simultaneously at the Center for Curatorial Studies Museum from Sunday, February 11, to Sunday, February 25. On February 11, there will be an opening reception from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The CCS Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The exhibitions and opening reception are free and open to the public, as are the film screenings and a satellite exhibition in Red Hook.

The three exhibitions, I Need You To Be There, Angles of Incidence, and The Volatile Real were conceived in collaboration between curatorial teams of first-year graduate students and visiting curator, Maria Hlavajova, artistic director of the Begane Grond Center for Contemporary Art in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The works in the exhibitions, which embody themes of absence, reflection, direct address, and fiction, were selected from the Marieluise Hessel Collection, on permanent loan to the Center for Curatorial Studies.

I Need You to Be There presents works that require viewer participation. They challenge the viewer’s capacity to pay attention in a media-dominated culture. This exhibition features works by Vito Acconci, Jenny Holzer, Paul McCarthy, and other artists and was curated by Cassandra Coblentz, Gillian Cuthill, Ryan Doherty, Luiza Interlenghi, and Marketa Uhlirova.

The exhibition Angles of Incidence uses the mirror and its capacity for reproduction as a metaphor to explore identity and self-awareness. The artists in this exhibition investigate these themes through autobiography and self-portraiture. Angles of Incidence features works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Cindy Sherman, among others, and was curated by Kristen Evangelista, Sandra Firmin, and Jenni Sorkin.

The Volatile Real addresses the representation of the \"real\" in contemporary photography, video, film, and digital media, which are not only the essential forms of mass media, but tools of contemporary artists as well. This exhibition explores the tactics and uses of these media to question, adapt, and construct reality. The Volatile Real features works by Matthew Barney, Tracey Moffatt, Pipilotti Rist, and other artists, and was curated by Feng Liu, Elizabeth Fisher, Kelly Lindner, Sheri-Lyn Shepperd, and Jill Winder.

In conjunction with the three exhibitions and in collaboration with the Bard College Film Committee, three film and video screenings will be shown in the Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. On Wednesday, February 14, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sophie Calle\'s Double Blind will be shown. On Friday, February 23, and Sunday, February 25, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Steven Soderbergh\'s Schizopolis and shorts from the Peggy and Fred in Hell series by Leslie Thornton will be shown. The screenings are free and open to the public.

Additionally, there will be a satellite exhibition of artwork by Red Hook High School students, Bard undergraduates, and Bard MFA students. This exhibition will be on view from Sunday, February 18, to Saturday, March 3, at the Bard College student exhibition space at 7401 S. Broadway, Red Hook, NY. On February 18, there will be an opening reception from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. Exhibition hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
