VOCAL CONCERTS FEATURED AT BARD COLLEGE ON TUESDAY, MAY 8, AND THURSDAY, MAY 10
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY-The Music Program at Bard College will present two vocal concerts on Tuesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 10. The concerts are free and open to the public. Both begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents.
On Tuesday, the Bard Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of James Bagwell, will perform Bach's Cantata No. 106, God's Time is the Best Time, Giacomo Carisimi's Jephte, accompanied by baroque instruments. The ensemble will also perform two short a capella works by Igor Stravinsky, the Ave Maria and Pater Noster. Bard students will sing all the solo parts.
On Thursday, the Bard College Community Orchestra, also directed by Bagwell, will perform Verdi's Requiem, accompanied by a full orchestra. The 80-member chorus has been meeting weekly since early February rehearsing this work. Soloists are Arthur Burrows, Adrian Owen, and Rebecca Schob.
Bagwell, who was recently appointed music director of the Light Opera of Oklahoma, maintains an active schedule throughout the United States as a conductor of choral, operatic, and symphonic literature. He is the principal guest conductor and artistic adviser of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, which he has conducted this season in a performance of Bach's B Minor Mass, along with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Singers, a professional ensemble that he founded. Bagwell is also the music director of Cincinnati's May Festival Youth Chorus and director of the May Festival Summer Chorus. He has trained choruses for major American orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and Indianapolis Symphony.
