PETER MARK, AFRICAN ART HISTORY SPECIALIST, WILL SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 29 Topic of lecture is "19th-Century French Images of Casamance Architecture (Senegal)"
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Peter Mark, a professor of art history at Wesleyan University, will speak at Bard College on the topic of "19th-Century French Images of Casamance Architecture (Senegal)" on Monday, October 29. The program, sponsored by the African and African Diaspora Studies and the art history programs at Bard, begins at 4:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building and is free and open to the public. A reception with Mark will follow the lecture.
Mark, an accomplished scholar in the field of African art history and religion, has worked extensively in the Casamance region of Senegal and among the Diola, the majority people of the region (Casamance is the southwest part of Senegal and used to belong to Portuguese Guinea). He has published many works including A Cultural, Economic, and Religious History of the Basse Casamance Since 1500; The Wild Bull and the Sacred Forest: Form, Meaning, and Change in Senegambian Initiation Masks; and Africans in European Eyes: The Portrayal of Black Africans in Fourteenth and Fifteenth Century Europe. Mark is presently completing another work on Casamance architecture.
Peter Mark teaches African and African American art history at Wesleyan University. He received a B.A. from Harvard University, an M.A. from Syracuse University, a Ph.D. from Yale University, and an M.A.A.E. from Wesleyan University.
Recently, Mark served as the interpreter for the French Canine Unit that provided rescue services at the site of the World Trade Center.
