ZOE B. ZAK TRIO WILL PERFORM AT BARD COLLEGE ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7 Concert will feature traditional and new Hebrew and English songs
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.?The Zoe B. Zak trio?featuring vocalist, accordionist, and pianist Zak; flutist Paul Marienthal; and wash tub bassist, Studio Stu?will perform at Bard College on Thursday, February 7. The concert, sponsored by the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Programs, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Bard Hall and is free and open to the public.
The program will feature Zak's original songs, sung in Hebrew and English and combining elements of jazz harmonies, blues singing, Latin beats, and Balkan harmonies. Zak is well known for her expressive renderings of ancient texts set to lush and sometimes unexpected music. These works will be woven into a program that will begin with traditional Havdalah melodies and concludes with a question-and-answer session with the artists.
Marienthal, director of the Trustee Leader Scholars Program at Bard, is an "extraordinary flutist who is a magician when it comes to interpreting my music," according to Zak. "Studio Stu plays the wash tub bass like no one else . . . close your eyes and you will think you're hearing the finest of upright bass instruments being played."
Rona Sheramy, assistant professor of Jewish Studies at Bard, says "the concert is not to be missed. The members of the trio engage their audience with both their love of music and their enjoyment in playing with one another."
