BARD IN CHINA TO SPONSOR FEBRUARY 18 LECTURE ON THE ORIGINS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS IN CHINA
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Monday, February 18, Bard in China, a program of Bard College, will present a lecture by Boston University anthropologist Robert Weller. His talk, "The Origins of Environmental Action in Chinese Society: Anthropological Reflections on Globalization, Culture, and Authoritarian Politics," is free and open to the public and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center.
Weller is a professor in the Department of Anthropology and a research associate at the Institute for the Study of Economic Culture at Boston University. His most recent book is Alternate Civilities: Democracy and Culture in China and Taiwan. Other books include Unities and Diversities in Chinese Religion and Resistance, Chaos and Control in China: Taiping Rebels, Taiwanese Ghosts and Tiananmen. He has also co-edited Power and Protest in the Countryside: Studies of Rural Unrest in Asia, Europe and Latin America, and the newly published Unruly Gods: Divinity and Society in China.
Professor Weller's current research is concerned with the development of the environmental movement and nature tourism in China and Taiwan in the context of economic growth. He is also looking at the role of local voluntary organizations as mediators between state and society in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, and he has consulted on poverty and unemployment relief in western China.
