ART TRADITIONS AND CHAN MONASTERIES IN CHINA TO BE SUBJECT OF TALK AT BARD COLLEGE ON OCTOBER 23

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard in China will present a talk by Bard College Associate Professor of Studio Arts Hap Tivey on Wednesday, October 23. Tivey

will compare the state of current art trends with ancient traditions of the Chan monasteries in China. His talk, "Video and Comments on Travel in China," is based on a recent trip sponsored by the Freeman Foundation. The event is free and open to the public and takes place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center.

Tivey has had solo exhibitions at Blum Helman, Diane Brown, New York; Elizabeth Leach, Portland, Oregon; Landau-Alexander, Margo Leavin, Los Angeles; and Picasso Studio, Paris. His work has also been included in collections at Dia Center for the Arts; Guggenheim Museum, New York and Bilbao; Museum of Modern Art and P.S. 1, New York; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; AT&T; Prudential; Federal Reserve; and Bank of America. His awards include National Endowment for the Arts, National Science Foundation, Lockheed, and Katherine Roen fellowships. Publications include The Art of Light and Space, Shift L.A./N.Y., Rooms P.S. 1, Artforum, Art in America, and Art News.

Tivey has a B.A. from Pomona College and an M.A. and M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate School. He has undergone monastic practice at Hofuku-ji and Tofuku-ji, Japan.
