FIRST EARTHFEST AT BARD COLLEGE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 19 Free program celebrates Earth Day with music, activities, speakers, and a pot luck feast in the field by Bard's Community Garde

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The first EarthFest, a program in celebration of Earth Day, will be held at Bard College on Saturday, April 19, from noon to 6:00 p.m. There will be musical performances, activities, speakers, a barter market, and a pot luck feast held in the field adjoining Bard's Community Garden. In the event of inclement weather, the program will take place in the Bertelsmann Campus Center. All events are free and open to the public.

Organized by Bard first-year students Megan Kerins and Christine Neumann and junior Daniel Zinder, the EarthFest will feature creative dance, a storyteller, gardening, face-painting, trash art, yoga, a mud pit, a tarot card reader, and bluegrass music, an open mic, and a drumming circle, as well as musical performances by the Cider Bandits, Pierce Woodward, Jordan Caress, Hillary Konrad, Dave Ends, and Dan Zinder. There will also be a barter market where people can bring goods to trade or sell and the pot luck feast will be offered throughout the day. In addition to a dish to offer to others, people should bring their own tableware.

"The community needs to celebrate the earth," says Kerins. "We live in such a beautiful, delicate environment, with the Hudson River and Catskills so nearby, that we should be appreciative of this beauty and aware of our relationship to it. The EarthFest is a way to increase this awareness and to inspire within us a sense that we can successfully challenge the environmental problems that threaten this area. In addition, it will be a great deal of fun!"

Speakers will include Andy Bicking, Public Outreach and Volunteer Manager of Scenic Hudson; Joel Kovel, Alger Hiss Professor of Social Studies at Bard, who will speak on the topic of political activism; Paul Marienthal, director of the Trustee Leader Scholar Program at Bard, who will speak about the Community Garden; and Maxwell Schnurer of Marist College, who will talk about animal rights.
