PIANO AND CELLO DUO IN RECITAL AT BARD ON FEBRUARY 15 Pia*ce will perform works by Poulenc and Franck in this free performance
*Please note time change. The concert will begin in Bard Hall at 2:00 p.m.ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Pia*ce, a New York City-based piano and cello duo, will perform a recital at Bard College on Sunday, February 15. The program, presented by the Music Program, is free and open to the public and begins at 4:00 p.m. in Bard Hall.
Pia*ce, composed of pianist Jocelyn Swigger and cellist Kate Sanford Spingarn, will perform the cello and piano sonatas of Cesar Franck and Francis Poulenc.
"The name of the duo is a combination of 'piano' and 'cello' and also connotes both pleasure and peace," says Swigger, adding, "The Franck and Poulenc sonatas complement each other in surprising ways. They both have quintessentially rich French harmonies and beautiful melodies, but the emotional journeys they take you on are very different, from the spiritual longing of the Franck to the carnival atmosphere of the Poulenc."
Active as teachers and performers, Pia*ce members Swigger and Spingarn met while students at the Oberlin Conservatory, and have been sharing their musical friendship with audiences ever since. Whether commissioning new music or mixing older pieces in rare combinations, the duo makes a point of exploring unusual programming.
