BISHOP JOHN SHELBY SPONG WILL SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE ABOUT RELIGION, SEXUALITY, AND CHURCH CRISIS

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The former Episcopal Bishop of New Jersey, John Shelby Spong, will speak at Bard College about religion, sexuality and church crisis. The free program, sponsored by the God and Sexuality Conference at Bard, will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center.

Bishop Spong is the author of several books, including Living in Sin? A Bishop Rethinks Human Sexuality and A New Christianity for a New World. He served as Bishop of Newark for 24 years until his retirement in 2000, and has emerged as the preeminent liberal voice for Christianity through his role as a minister and teacher who makes theology accessible. He is considered a champion of an inclusive faith by many inside and outside the Christian church.

In this preconference event, Bishop Spong will discuss the challenges of the religion and sexuality debates that, he says, the church must face if the Christian faith is to go on.

The 2004 God and Sexuality Conference at Bard, a student-initiated academic event, is the fifth and largest symposium of the series, and will meet on April 25 and 26 at the College. The two-day event will offer a combination of academic presentations, seminar-style workshops, and less formal discussions.
