CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHOR DIANE WILLIAMS WILL READ FROM HER RECENT WORKS ON APRIL 26 AT BARD COLLEGE
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Author Diane Williams will give a reading from her recent work at Bard College on Monday, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. Williams is the author of four volumes of short fiction including Excitability: Selected Stories 1986–1996. She will be introduced by novelist and Bard literature Professor Bradford Morrow. The reading, which is being presented as part of Morrow's innovative course on contemporary fiction, is free and open to the public and begins at 2:30 p.m. in room 101 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building.
Morrow notes that Williams’s stories are "wry, sensuous, spiritual, wise, raunchy, familial . . . alive to the contradictory nuances which define our lives." Diane Williams burst onto the literary scene in 1990 with This is About the Body, the Mind, the Soul, the World, Time, and Fate. She followed this initial success with Some Sexual Success Stories and The Stupefaction, from which she has gained a large following of admirers, from critics and poets to students of creative writing. A coeditor of StoryQuarterly for 11 years, Williams founded and is the editor of the new literary annual Noon.
"Diane Williams conjures up an edgy, jagged state of mind, a lurching consciousness in a culture of speed and amnesia," writes Matthew Stadler in the New York Times. "Williams is a practitioner of the new prose genre dubbed ‘sudden fiction,’" notes Eli Gottlieb in Elle. "She is a master of sorts, who when she wants to, rises to a poetry of great, if telegraphic intensity."
