JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES AT BARD PRESENTS FREE READINGS BY INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED POETS ON THURSDAYS THROUGH NOVEMBER 18

Casper and Christian Hawkey; Alice Notley reads on November 11; and on November 18, Linh Dinh and Rachel Levitsky will read from recent work ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The John Ashbery Poetry Series at Bard College presents readings by internationally acclaimed poets on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. The programs, introduced by Ashbery, the Charles P. Stevenson Jr. Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard, will be held in the Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. On Thursday, October 28, Christian Hawkey and Robert N. Casper, cofounders of the international poetry journal jubilat, will read from their recent work. Hawkey’s collection, The Book of Funnels, has just been released by Verse Press. His poems have appeared in such journals as the Colorado Review, Volt, Denver Quarterly, American Poetry Review, and Paris Review. Hawkey is the coeditor of jubilat. He lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and is an assistant professor of creative writing at the Pratt Institute in New York City. Casper has worked at a variety of journals, presses, and literary organizations over the past 10 years. He is the publisher and coeditor of jubilat as well as a cofounder of the jubilat reading series in Somerville, Massachusetts. Casper received an M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he helped start the Pioneer Valley segment of the Poetry Society of America’s Poetry in Motion program. He has also worked as the Small Press Librarian at the Loft Writing Center and at the University of Wisconsin and University of Pittsburgh Presses. On Thursday, November 11, the series presents Alice Notley. Notley was married to the late poet Ted Berrigan; she wrote The Scarlet Cabinet with her second husband, British poet Douglas Oliver. She is the author of Disobedience; Mysteries of Small Houses; The Descent of Alette; Close to me & Closer . . .(The Language of Heaven) and Désamère; To Say You; Selected Poems of Alice Notley; Homer’s Art; At Night the States; Parts of a Wedding; Margaret and Dusty; Sorrento; How Spring Comes, which received a 1982 San Francisco Poetry Center Book Award; Waltzing Matilda; When I Was Alive; Songs for the Unborn Second Baby; A Diamond Necklace; Alice Ordered Me To Be Made; Incidentals in the Day World; Phoebe Light; and 165 Meeting House Lane. She has also published Tell Me Again (1982), an autobiography, and experiments with the visual arts. Notley is the editor of Ted Berrigan’s posthumous collection, A Certain Slant of Sunlight. The fall series concludes on Thursday, November 18, with a reading by Linh Dinh and Rachel Levitsky. Dinh’s books include Night, Again: Contemporary Fiction From Vietnam, which he edited and cotranslated; Drunkard Boxing; and Fake House. His poems and stories have appeared in Kenyon Review, Sulfur, American Poetry Review, Denver Review, Sonora Review, New American Writing, and many others. He is also an editor and translator. Levitsky is the author of the long poem Under the Sun and the chapbooks Cartographies of Error and Dearly, among others. She cocurates Belladonna*--New York City's feminist experimental poetic reading and pamphlet series, which she founded in 1999. Her poetry plays have been produced in Boulder, San Francisco, New York. Levitsky's current project is called NEIGHBOR. She teaches at the Pratt Institute and The Poetry Project. Since 1995, the John Ashbery Poetry Series has brought leading contemporary poets to Bard for readings and discussion in an intimate setting.
