BARD IN CHINA TO HOST LECTURE ON GANG OF FOUR TRIAL ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Wednesday, March 9, Alexander C. Cook, Columbia University, will deliver a lecture at Bard College. His talk, “Unsettling Accounts: The Trial of the Gang of Four and the Cultural Logic of Late Socialism in China, 1978-1981,” is presented by Bard in China and the Political Studies Program at Bard, with support from the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. The lecture, takes place at 7:30 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Language Center. Cook, whose talk will deal with issues of narrative form and historical interpretation, has lectured and taught extensively on East Asian studies. He is a Ph.D. candidate in History and East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University, and has taught at Columbia and New York University. He is the author of “‘A Monk with an Umbrella’: The Drama and Realities of Revenge in the Trial of the Gang of Four,” in the forthcoming Revenge, East and West: China, edited by Kevin Wetmore; and “‘Settling Accounts’: Law and History in the Trial of the Gang of Four,” in Law and History: Current Legal Issues volume 6, edited by Andrew Lewis and Michael Lobban. Cook has received numerous fellowships and honors, including graduate fellow, Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy; C. Martin Wilbur Fellowship, Weatherhead East Asian Institute; William J. Fulbright Student Grant, Institute for International Education; Harris T. Whittemore Prize for East Asian Studies, Brown University; and Thomas J. Watson scholarship. He has an M.A. degree from Columbia and a B.A. from Brown University.
