THE BARD MUSIC PROGRAM PRESENTS AN AFTERNOON OF LIEDER WITH THE LORIEN ENSEMBLE ON MARCH 13
“Nature, Love, and Longing” features songs by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Lorien Ensemble will perform a program of 19th-century lieder by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann on Sunday, March 13. Presented by the Music Program at Bard College, the recital is free and open to the public and will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Bard Hall. “This adventurous group of singers has led us jauntily through the highways and byways of the world of music,” writes Simon Wainrib in the Berkshire Record. Their performances have “an appropriate mix of charm and verve, demonstrating again the versatility and broad interpretive range that has become the Lorien Ensemble’s hallmark.” In the program at Bard, entitled “Nature, Love, and Longing,” the Lorien Ensemble will perform music that spans the 19th century, from Schubert’s first great lied, written when he was 17, to songs of the mature Brahms. The recital features duets and trios as well as solo songs. The members of the Lorien Ensemble—soprano Madonna Meagher, tenor Douglas Schmolze, baritone Jack Brown, and pianist Deborah Morris—were united by a mutual love for German lieder and a desire to create a Liederabend in the old tradition. Since 1994, the group has specialized in the performance of vocal chamber music incorporating stringed instruments, and in programs that explore the literature of literature of Germany and Austria; France and Spain; Italy; the British Isles; and America. The ensemble is based in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. For further information, call the Music Program at 845-758-7250. # # # (3/1/05)This event was last updated on 03-14-2005
