BARD IN CHINA TO HOST A STUDENT PANEL ON LABOR IN ASIA ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Wednesday, April 20, Bard in China will gather a panel of graduating seniors and alumnae to discuss labor in Asia. The panel will include presentations on the bargaining power of Bangladeshi women, interprovincial migration in rural China, and China’s “floating population.” The discussion takes place at 7:30 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Language Center. The talk is presented by Bard in China with support from the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. Panelists include: Rubaba Ali, B.A., economics, May 2004 “Impact of Garment Sector Trade on the Well-Being and Bargaining Power of Bangladeshi Women” Ali will discuss the situation of women employed in the garment sector before and after garment employment. He will also talk about the problems he faced collecting data and how he managed to do his research based on secondary data. Amy Saupan Chau, B.A., economics & Asian studies, May 2005 “Inter-provincial Migration in Rural China (from Sichuan to Fujian)” Chau will focus on the factors that led to her interest in the field of interprovincial migration in rural China. She will also talk about the problems she faced during interviews and the solutions she found to overcome them. Jonathan Greenblatt, B.A., history & Asian studies, May 2005 “Deconstructing Social Categories: China’s ‘Floating Population’” Greenblatt’s talk will touch upon the basic dimensions and critical issues surrounding the widely discussed “floating population” (liudong renkou). After offering an overview of the subject, he will present a documentary of his research discussing how he came to choose his topic, what he was attempting to understand, and the challenges he faced during the research process.
