BARD PROFESSOR MARK DANNER HOSTS THE “LOVE AND TERROR FILM SERIES”

Screening of Burn! opens the free series on Thursday, October 20 ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Mark Danner, the Henry R. Luce Professor of Human Rights and Journalism at Bard, hosts the new “Love and Terror Film Series” at Bard College. The inaugural film in the series is Gillo Pontecorvo’s masterpiece Burn!, starring Marlon Brando. The free series is sponsored by the Human Rights Project and will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Danner says that Burn! Pontecorvo’s sequel to Battle of Algiers, “is a stunning epic about neocolonialism, political manipulation, and the struggle for liberation set on a Caribbean island during the late 19th century. Which is to say that this movie—like Battle of Algiers before it—is about how we live now.” The series will continue on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Weis Cinema. Danner will lead discussions following each film. The screenings continue with Shampoo (1975) on October 31; Costa-Graves’ Z (1969) on November 7; Alfie on November 21; Internal Affairs on November 28; Interrogation (Pesluchanie) (1982) on December 5; and A Very British Coup (1988) on December 12. Mark Danner is a writer who for 25 years has written on politics and foreign policy, focusing on war and conflict. He has covered Central America, Haiti, the Balkans, and Iraq and the Middle East, among many other stories. He is the author of The Massacre at El Mozote: A Parable of the Cold War, The Road to Illegitimacy, and Torture and Truth: America, Abu Ghraib, and the War on Terror, as well as forthcoming books on Haiti and the former Yugoslavia. Since 1990 Danner has been a staff writer at The New Yorker and is a frequent contributor to New York Review of Books. Danner's work has appeared in Harper’s, the New York Times, Aperture, and many other newspapers and magazines. He has cowritten and helped produce two hourlong documentaries for the ABC News program Peter Jennings Reporting, and his work has received, among other honors, a National Magazine Award, three Overseas Press Awards, and an Emmy. In 1999 he was named a MacArthur Fellow. In addition to teaching at Bard, Danner is professor of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.
