BARD COLLEGE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC’S SPRING CONCERT AND LECTURE SERIES OFFERS TWO FREE PROGRAMS IN APRIL

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Conservatory Concerts and Lectures Series, presented by The Bard College Conservatory of Music, offers two programs in April. All performances are free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary. On Saturday, April 15, at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall, students of The Bard College Conservatory of Music will perform a program of chamber music, including works by Johannes Brahms, Aaron Copland, George Crumb, Robert Schumann, and Dmitrii Shostakovich. Students performing in the concert are: violinists Anja Boenicke, Luosha Fang, Yuan Ma, Di Wu, Tina Zhang, and Tian Zhou; violists Liyuan Liu and Shuangshuang Liu; cellists Jia Cao, Emanuel Evans, and Nan Jia; flutist Jo Brand; clarinetists Samuel Israel and Sarah Wegener; and pianists Allegra Chapman, Wui-Ming Gan, Xin Tong, and Wei Zhou. Also performing are non-Conservatory students, cellist Brant Lewis and clarinetist Christina Kaminski. The Conservatory students, now in their first year at the College, hail from five countries in addition to the United States, and from five states within the United States. The chamber ensembles have been coached throughout the fall and spring semesters by faculty of the Conservatory. On Tuesday, April 25, at 4:30 p.m. in Olin Hall, Melvin Chen, associate director of the Conservatory, and Dr. Larry Norton of Memorial Sloan-Kettering present a “Conversation on Creativity in Music and Science.” Dr. Norton is deputy physician in chief for Breast Cancer Programs and medical director of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center and Iris Cantor Diagnostic Center. He is also the principal investigator of a program project grant from the National Cancer Institute that is aimed at better understanding breast cancer in the laboratory and bringing these advances into clinical practice. Assistant professor of music and interdisciplinary studies at Bard, Chen has performed as a pianist at major venues in the United States (including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Weill Recital Hall, the Frick Collection, and the Kennedy Center); he is also a chemist, with a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University. This discussion is copresented by the Biology Program at Bard. The series concludes on Thursday, May 11, at 8:00 p.m., with a performance by the Bard Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Leon Botstein, at the Sosnoff Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. The program features the Spohr Violin Concerto No. 8 (known as the “Gesangszene”), with violinist Luo-sha Fang, a winner of the Conservatory Concerto Competition. Members and principals of the American Symphony Orchestra are also available for instruction, coaching, and leading of sectional rehearsals in the Conservatory Orchestra. In 2006–07, the Conservatory will introduce three additional programs: the Vocal Arts Graduate Program, directed by Dawn Upshaw; The Conductors Institute and its graduate program in conducting, directed by Harold Farberman; and the Composition Program, directed by Joan Tower and George Tsontakis.
