Recital with Clarinetist Laura Flax and Flutist Bart Feller on October 4

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.�The popular Conservatory Concerts and Lectures series, presented by The Bard College Conservatory of Music, continues with a faculty recital on Thursday, October 4, by clarinetist Laura Flax and guest artist and flutist Bart Feller. Featuring works by Bizet, Carter, Durufl�, Dutilleux, and Tower, the free program begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. Other performers include pianist Linda Mark, marimbist Simon Boyar, and violist Marka Gustavsson. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis; no reservations are necessary. The concert includes performances of Georges Bizet�s �Jeux d�Enfants� for flute, clarinet, and piano; Elliott Carter�s �Esprit rude/Esprit doux� I and II for flute, clarinet, and marimba; Henri Dutilleux�s Sonatine for flute and piano; Maurice Durufl�s Prelude, Recitative and Variations for flute, viola, and piano, Op. 3; Joan Tower�s �Wings� and �Duet�; and Camille Saint-Sa�ns�s Tarantella for flute, clarinet, and piano. Laura Flax is the principal clarinetist of both the New York City Opera and American Symphony Orchestra. She also performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic and has been a member of the San Diego and San Francisco Symphonies. She has premiered works by Elliott Carter, Philip Glass, Shulamit Ran, and Joan Tower, among other composers. In addition to serving on the faculty of the Conservatory, Flax is also on the faculty of The Juilliard School, and gives master classes and recitals throughout the United States. Bart Feller is principal flute of the New York City Opera and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Bargemusic, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has appeared as concerto soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Jupiter Symphony. Simon Boyar has appeared as a marimba soloist with the New Jersey Symphony under the baton of Sergiu Comissiona and as a percussion soloist with The Juilliard Orchestra with New York City Opera Maestro George Manahan, and has presented the world premieres of numerous works for the marimba. He has performed internationally and at New York venues ranging from Lincoln Center to the Knitting Factory. He has served as chairman of the Juilliard Pre-College Percussion Department, the youngest person ever to be named to this position, for which he created an innovative program focusing on all areas of percussion. And in February 2007 he was the featured soloist with violinist Guillermo Figueroa and the American Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leon Botstein, for the world premiere of Harold Farberman�s double violin/percussion concerto. Violist Marka Gustavsson of the Colorado Quartet has appeared on the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society�s �Meet the Music� series, in Avery Fisher Hall and Boston�s Symphony Hall with the Brandenburg Ensemble, and as a member of the featured string quartet in the ABC documentary Passion to Play. Internationally, she has performed in the Festival Presence de Ligeti in Paris, for the Queen of the Netherlands in Holland, and at Toru Takemitsu�s memorial concert at Oji Hall in Tokyo. She studied at Indiana University with Joseph Gingold, at the Mannes School of Music with Felix Galimir, and recently received her doctorate from the City University of New York with a dissertation on the violin music of Enesco. Gustavsson, with the members of the Colorado Quartet, serves on the music faculty of Bard College and the Conservatory. Pianist Linda Mark is a staff accompanist at The Juilliard School and a member of the New York Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble. She won first prize in the Baldwin Piano Competition and two grand prizes at the International Recording Competition in Austin, Texas. She regularly performs with flutists Julius Baker, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Carol Wincenc, and recently recorded solo piano works for the soundtrack of the film Letter Without Words. The Conservatory Concerts and Lectures continue with additional performances and master classes with faculty members and students of the Conservatory, as well as visiting orchestras and artists, throughout the semester. The Hungarian Brass Quintet presents a recital on Thursday, October 11, at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. The recital �Arias & Bacarolles,� performed by students of the Graduate Program in Vocal Arts, is offered on Wednesday, October 17, at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. The Conservatory presents the Seoul Arts High School Orchestra, conducted by Nanse Gum, on Wednesday, October 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater of the Fisher Center. A performance of Bruckner�s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor by the Mannes College Orchestra, conducted by David Hayes, is presented on Saturday, November 3, at 8:00 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater of the Fisher Center. On Wednesday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Bard Hall, the Conservatory and the Music Program at Bard present �Music Alive!� The program, hosted by Joan Tower, features more than 15 musicians performing works by Copland, Schnittke, Tower, and Tsontakis, as well as a premiere by Conservatory composition student Conor Brown. The preliminary round of the Bard Conservatory Concerto Competition is held on Sunday, November 18, at 10:00 a.m. in Olin Hall, followed by the final round on Monday, November 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater of the Fisher Center. The Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Melvin Chen, performs on Sunday, December 16, at 3:00 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater of the Fisher Center. Chamber concerts are presented in Olin Hall on Friday, November 2, at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday, November 11, at 3:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 1, at 8:00 p.m. Artists and programs to be announced.
