The New York Times Calls Walter Russell Mead’s New Book The Arc of a Covenant “A Nuanced History of the Forces Shaping U.S.-Israel Relations”
“There are few subjects in American foreign policy that get as much attention,” writes Walter Russell Mead, James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and the Humanities, in his new book The Arc of a Covenant, which explores the history of U.S.-Israel relations. “Enough books on this subject have been published to fill a respectable library; do we really need another one?” he asks. In turn, reviewing the book for the New York Times, Jonathan Tepperman asks whether Mead’s book passes his own test. “The answer is yes, and emphatically so,” Tepperman writes. Calling the prose “among the best I’ve encountered in 25 years of reviewing foreign-policy books,” Tepperman says The Arc of a Covenant is an expansive book that “strays well beyond the confines of diplomatic history” in order to fully contend with its subject matter. “The result is less a history of U.S.-Israel policy than a sweeping and masterfully told history of U.S. foreign policy in general, as seen through the lens of the U.S.-Israel relationship,” he writes.
