B.A., M.A., University of Nebraska at Omaha; Ph.D., University of Minnesota. Fulbright Fellowship, Germany (1964–65). Member of editorial boards, Journal of Homosexuality and Journal of Men’s Studies. Editor, German Women in the Nineteenth Century, A Social History (1984); Forbidden History (1992). Founding editor, Journal of the History of Sexuality and the Chicago Series on Sexuality, History, and Society (University of Chicago Press). Historical consultant for The History of Sex, five-part series on the History Channel (1999). (1969–2000) Professor Emeritus of History.
