Biography:

Studied at Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College. Tiona Nekkia McClodden is an artist, filmmaker, and curator who has looked critically at intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and social commentary through an interdisciplinary practice that includes documentary film, experimental video, sculpture, and sound installation. She is the recipient of numerous honors, among them a 2018 Magnum Foundation grant, which honors artists exploring new models of storytelling; 2017 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award; and 2016 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. Her work has been exhibited/screened nationally and internationally at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, MoMA PS1, Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art, MoCA Los Angeles, Brooklyn Museum, London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and Kansai Queer Film Festival in Japan. At Bard, McClodden will continue her exploration of key black artists—poets Essex Hemphill and Brad Johnson, the composer Julius Eastman—who produced influential work at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Her most recent performance installation, CLUB, was on view at Performance Space 122 in New York, the space in which Keith Haring had his first studio exhibition. At Bard: 2018–19.
