Biography:
Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo (they/them) is an artist, activist, storyteller, and educator. Their practice is based in the printed multiple, community-based work, and installation building, and invites the viewer to recall and share their own lived narratives in order to create a dialogue around the telling of BIQTPOC (Black, Indigenous, Queer, Trans, People of Color) stories. Branfman-Verissimo, who is represented by SEPTEMBER Gallery, has had solo shows at Deli Gallery and Printed Matter, Inc. in New York City; and Roll Up Projects (Oakland, California); Anderson Gallery (Richmond, Virginia). Their work has been included in exhibitions and performances at, among others, MoCA Cleveland, Best Western Art Gallery (Santa Fe), Konsthall C (Stockholm), EFA Project Space (New York City), San Francisco Arts Commission and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), and L’Internationale Online. They previously taught at University of New Mexico’s MFA Program, Virginia Commonwealth University; Old Dominion University; and Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York. They have been awarded residencies and fellowships at University of New Mexico; Black Space Program, San Francisco; Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, California; Women’s Studio Workshop; Vermont Studio Center; and ACRE Residency, Chicago, among others. Their artist books and printed editions have been published by Endless Editions, Childish Books, Press Press, and Printed Matter, Inc., and are in the permanent collections at the California College of the Arts Printmaking Archive, University of California Santa Cruz Library, New York University Special Collections, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Library.BFA, printmaking, California College of the Arts; MFA, painting and printmaking, Virginia Commonwealth University.
