On this page you will find resources around policies that impact life in the residence halls. For the full policy text, we encourage you to review the student handbook below. The policies for life in the residence halls are derived from local, state, and federal law (especially fire safety codes) and are enforced to assure safety of the community.

Keys for every residence hall room are secured at B&G. Only students who are financially cleared (as per the Bursar) are issued keys. If a student changes rooms during the academic year, they will turn in their old room key in order to get their new room assignment. Before the end of the school year, students will receive check-out information and a key envelope on their residence hall door with their name, building and room on it. In this envelope students will return all keys, including labs, studios, offices, etc. If students leave campus before the end of the semester, they must turn their keys in at B&G prior to leaving campus. At the end of year and graduation, key packets can be dropped in any of the RED DROP BOXES at Shea House and B&G. Students do not need to return their Bard ID; ID cards are retained throughout a student’s time at Bard.
There is no initial charge for keys or IDs. A $20.00 replacement fee will be charged per lost key and payable to the Student Accounts Office. IDs are created at Buildings and Grounds between the hours of 11:00am-12:00noon and 12:30pm-3:00pm- Monday through Friday.
There is a charge of $20 for EACH UNRETURNED key (residence hall or non-residence hall keys) at the end of the year, or upon the student leaving at any time during the semester. If the lock needs to be changed due to an unreturned key, (at the discretion of the department) a charge of $60.00 will be applied to the student’s account.
Students must show their Bard College photo ID when obtaining replacement residence hall keys. Keys issued due to a room change/swap will be issued only after receiving a notice from the Office of Residence Life & Housing. Requests for non-residence hall keys should be made directly to the Physical Plant, with proper authorization forms available on the B&G website: (https://www.bard.edu/bandg/). No letters will be accepted.
