As Bard’s writing and learning center, the Learning Commons welcomes all Bard Annandale and OSUN-network undergraduates. We provide Bard’s online and in-seat tutoring, academic enrichment services, and college writing support. Our trained tutors will work with you in all forms of co-curricular learning, course work, learning strategies, writing, information literacy, engaged reading across the disciplines, knowledge building, and rhetorical skills for the public and civic spheres. We are home to the academic writing and Writing Fellows programs -- dedicating fellows to courses for in-context writing tutoring. Collaborative learning support in subject-specific tutoring is provided in a socially structured space, along with writing and other themed workshops. We field a wide range of courses -- in math, college writing, ESL, digital literacy, inclusive pedagogies, and public speaking. The Learning Commons is also home to workshops and tutoring services in English for Academic Purposes, research, citation, and academic integrity, and Quantitative Literacy, as well as inclusive pedagogical-training programs. Our website features links to employment opportunities; academic, skills-based, and professional writing resources; support for learning differences (see Services for Students with Disabilities below), and information about math placement. (see Office of Quantitative Literacy below).
The Learning Commons offers offsite faculty pedagogical development through our work with the Institute for Writing and Thinking and works with the Center for Civic Engagement, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, Disability Resources and Accessibility, and Bard faculty to ensure the success of Bard students. We provide tutoring during the L&T program and throughout the year to all students enrolled locally and on all Open Society University Network campuses. One-on-one writing consultants and workshops are available for senior project writers throughout the academic year. Students may request a peer tutor by stopping by or contacting the Learning Commons by email and arranging online consulting, drop-in tutoring, or study rooms at [email protected]. College writing consultants and peer supplemental instruction are available every evening of the week. We host the “Community of Writers” series of writing rooms, having founded “Shut Up and Write!” and "Shut Up and SProj!" We offer study and resource rooms in math, economics, statistics, computer science, physics, and chemistry. All Learning Commons services are free, of course. The Learning Commons is an equal opportunity employer and remains committed to fostering a culture of mindful reading and writing in the academic, private, public, and civic domain. Our ethos is guided by collaborative learning and other High Impact Practices in support of academic excellence at Bard and across its affiliated local and international institutions.
